What Are You Laughing About?
October 12 - November 11, 2017

Press Release

What Are You Laughing About? is the second solo exhibition by the artist Will Kurtz at  Kim Foster Gallery. Interacting with the artist’s infamous street people, Kurtz introduces us to his large scale paintings inspired by snapshots taken in Coney Island.

An extraordinary array of artists have viewed Coney Island as a microcosm of the American Experience, an entertainment mecca for the masses that has seen its share of urban decline. Fittingly enough, Kurtz theatrically positions his marginal folks in relationship to his Coney Island inspired paintings to animate the gallery space and champion a spectrum of humanity that contribute to the diversity of NYC’s demographic mix.

Much has been written about the shock and awe of experiencing the artist’s street people. Kurtz uses a collage of words and colorful advertising to reflect the sincerity and uniqueness of an individual. Newspaper, wood, wire, plaster gauze, tape and glue are magically transformed like alchemy into life size figures. In his attention to detail, Kurtz empathizes with those living life precariously.  They are anatomically correct, but for the everyday material of newspaper applied on the surface of each sculpture in a painterly abstract expressionistic way.

Kurtz likes to amuse and tease the viewer with a cacophony of imagery. He finds reality more interesting than fiction. The works can be seen as visual vignettes of pathos, compassion, nostalgia and humor.

Will Kurtz practiced as a landscape architect throughout the United States and Canada. Eventually his passion for art superseded landscape architecture and he moved to New York, graduating from the New York Academy of Art. He has been in several group exhibitions including “The Art of Now” at Hearst, New Portal Art Fair,  “See All About It” Port Authority of New York, “An Inclusive World” Queens Museum NY and “Paper as Art” Cornell Museum of Art in Delray Beach Fl. His work has been reviewed in the New York Times, New York Post, Fox 5 Good Day in NY,  Hyperallergic, NY Art Beat, Whitehot Magazine, buzzworthy, Tribes, Artefuse, among others, and is in various collections worldwide.
