Press Release
In (of) Our World, Susan Chrysler White’s solo exhibition explores issues of global dysfunction through the fusion of the baroque filigree that is a hallmark of her sculpture and the colorful geometric patterning fundamental to her painting vocabulary. In this show, White has two hanging sculptural pieces and two wall mounted sculptural pieces constructed from aluminum panels and painted Plexiglas.
This new work includes highly expressive reliefs that pour off the wall in cascading waterfalls and explode as aerial views of some kind of fractured topography. Her seductive totem-like pieces are almost decadent in their ornate detail. The drawn patterns allude to hybrid botanical and human anatomical forms in a stream of consciousness with calligraphic drawing printed on Plexiglas.
In RESIST, text is used as a repeated element rising from the floor to the ceiling intertwined in an elaborate white calligraphic motif.
White has had numerous exhibitions throughout the US, including the McNay Art Museum in Texas, Akron Museum in Ohio, Elaine Jacob Gallery at Wayne State in Detroit and Lehman College Art Gallery in NY. Her work is collected by the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Worcester Art Museum, American Embassy in Algeria, Rutgers, Fidelity, Citicorp, Hewlett-Packard, Sioux City Art Center, Kirkwood Community College, University of Iowa Foundation, University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, St. Lukes Hospital in Iowa, and most recently the Art Place at Fort Totten in D.C. She has done numerous large-scale public commissions. A recipient of a Joan Mitchell Foundation grant and an NEA fellowship, White is on the painting faculty at the University of Iowa.
Biography
There is a basic human tendency to seek order in the current of experience in which we are constantly swimming. There is a variety of languages (scientific, artistic, and spiritual, as well as ordinary discursive) by which we attempt to organize our worlds, and they frequently borrow from one another–thus the richness of metaphor.
Interlocking systems in my compositions allow structures to form and build larger aggregate systems. Densely layered material speaks, hopefully, metaphorically to the layering of meaning. The traces seen through the transparency of the material allude to the passage of time, fracturing and rebuilding of connections, weather maps exploding on our computer screens warning of volatile weather patterns, the instability of global political systems… Accretion and repetition express, in abstract pictorial language, dramatic environmental changes.
I want to explore ideas about climate, weather, history (both art and geopolitical), personal emotional and psychological states, what it means to have relationships, being a mother, the enormity of what it means to be human being. Parched landscapes, extreme flooding and uncontainable wild fires speak to a natural world out of balance.
